(Near Lukuchukai Mountain, 1878)

Temperature excessive
oppressive
hardening afterbirth
and seeking on sand
bleats of life.

Busy hands of the reed clan
and night
like buzzards
beaten back for a time
by reeds afire.

Hands of burning skin
busy among bleats
and white piles
with frozen
shadows.

Ewes mixing milling
crying in the
frenzied frozen
time of tired
bone.

Copper touch of first
glow with no heat
though busy
on western mesas
with hope.
