Toughly,
on brushy perch,
the diminutive wren
marks his land,
his throat exploding notes
to mingle with the distant tones of hawk.
While I observe him strut and sing,
the sun drops through shaky aspen leaves,
upon my back,
coldly flecking me—
black and white—
wren spotted,
and such a singer I would be,
had I his throat, his aplomb.
